If a file was deleted accidentally by a user, it should be restored from backup with the help of administrator. This may consume a lot of time as we had to find and restore a previous version from the backup media. Depending on the storage strategy and schedule in the firm, the restored file may be an older version.
A feature called Shadow Copy should be enabled in 2003 server on a drive volume, makes point-in-time backups of all data stored on a volume if enabled, thereby allowing a user to easily access previous versions of file either for comparing current and previous versions or a file gets deled accidentally.
Shadow Copies work on volume basis and cannot be enabled for a single folder. This is a disaster recovery tool introduced in 2003 server.
