How to Recover Active Directory Database in Windows 2003 Server

Booting Computer into Directory Services Restore Mode

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. After the BIOS information is displayed, press F8.
  3. Use the down arrow to select Directory Services Restore Mode, and then press ENTER.
  4. Use the up and down arrows to select your computer, and then press ENTER.
  5. Log on using your administrative logon and password.

Starting ntdsutil Command Line tool

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open text box, type ntdsutil.

How to Recover the Database

  1. At the Ntdsutil command prompt, type files, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the file maintenance command prompt, type recover, press ENTER.Verification is displayed.NOTE: It is recommended that you perform a Semantic database analysis. Refer to the “References” section of this article for resources that describe how to perform the Semantic database analysis.
  3. To exit the tool, type q at the command prompt, press ENTER, type q, and then press ENTER.

Complete a Database Analysis

  1. At the Ntdsutil.exe command prompt, type Semantic database analysis, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the Semantic Checker command prompt, type Go, and then press ENTER.
  3. Verification is displayed. To exit, type q, press ENTER, type q, and then press ENTER.
