Automated System Recovery

This is a new feature introduced in 2003 which enables a failed server to be restored to operation without requiring extensive reconfiguration.ASR is not a replacement to the backup and it is used to restore a server configuration setting in the case of system failure more quickly. ASR is to be tried only after Last Known Good Configuration and Safe mode. ASR does not backup any data files so data files should be backed up using normal backup procedures.ASR has two parts namely,

  • ASR backup, which creates backup of system state.

  • ASR system Restore.

If a server is to be restored using ASR initiate booting with 2003server CD and press F2.Then ASR will read information from the floppy disk, restoring disk configuration. It automatically begins to restore from ASR backup. When the process is complete the server will be restored.
